Key Things to Know Before Hosting

  • The host's world is the "real" save. Only the host's world progress persists. Guest players carry over character progression but not world changes. Community-reported
  • The host bears the network load. Pick the player with the best internet as host. Community-reported
  • Host must be online for others to play. No dedicated server option. If the host disconnects, the session ends for everyone. Community-reported

4 Players vs 6 Players: Which Is Better?

Why 4 Players Is Recommended

  • Better coordination. Clear role assignments without overlapping responsibilities. Community-reported
  • Less base clutter. 4 players building keeps things organized. Community-reported
  • Resources stretch further. Shared pools mean each person gets a larger share. Community-reported
  • Fewer performance issues. 5–6 player sessions report more lag and desync. Community-reported

When 6 Players Works Well

  • Exploration-focused sessions. Split into pairs to cover more ground across biomes. Community-reported
  • Boss fights. More players means more damage output and familiar support. Community-reported
  • Stable connections. 6-player sessions are more sensitive to network quality. Community-reported

Co-op Role Assignments

In a 4-player co-op session, dividing roles makes progression smoother.

Gatherer

Collect raw materials — wood, stone, plants, ores, and rare drops.

Learn which biomes spawn which resources. Stockpile common materials so the Crafter never has to wait.

Community-reported

Crafter

Manage crafting stations, cook recipes, build structures, upgrade gear.

Coordinate with the Gatherer on which materials are needed next. Chest management is a known pain point — label or dedicate chests by category.

Community-reported

Familiar Lead

Capture, level up, and manage familiars for the whole team.

Familiar AI targeting has known issues in combat — position manually when possible. 3-star/Legend familiars are rare and worth hunting early.

Community-reported

Combat Explorer

Scout new areas, fight enemies, discover bosses and dungeons.

Spell line-of-sight and hitbox detection have reported issues. Learn enemy patterns before committing to melee range.

Known Issues & Troubleshooting

The following issues are actively reported by the Witchspire community. Fixes are listed where available.

Connection & Networking

Invite Not Received / Can't Join

Both players restart Witchspire and Steam. Check version match (bottom-left of main menu). Check Steam online status. Disable VPN/proxy. Add Witchspire to Windows Firewall allowed apps.

Community-reported

Russia/CIS Connection Issue

Developers have confirmed a hosts file workaround. Check Steam Community Discussions for pinned instructions.

Host Lag / Performance Drops

Reduce player count to 4 or fewer. Use wired Ethernet. Close background apps. Avoid all 6 players in the same small area. Lower host graphics settings.

Community-reported

Multiplayer Crashes

Verify game files (Steam → Library → right-click → Properties → Installed Files → Verify). Update GPU drivers. Reduce player count. Avoid rapid area transitions while others are loading.

Community-reported

Save & Progression

Save File Issues / Progress Lost

The host's world save persists. Guest world changes may not carry over. Character progression (levels, inventory) appears to persist for guests. Always host with the same player for world continuity. Back up saves manually. Steam Cloud saves are enabled in EA.

Community-reported

Demo/Playtest Save Carryover

No. Demo and Playtest saves do not carry over to Early Access. Everyone starts fresh.

Gameplay Issues in Co-op

Co-op Map Sync Bug

Map may not update correctly for non-host players. Explored areas may appear fog-of-war'd. No confirmed fix yet.

Community-reported

Familiar AI Issues in Co-op

Familiars behave erratically — missing attacks, getting stuck, teleporting. Position manually before combat. Familiar targeting is a known weak point even in single-player; co-op adds network latency.

Community-reported

Non-Host Equipment / Sound Issues

Equipment stat bonuses may not display correctly for guests (may still function). Audio may cut out during sessions — restarting the game fixes it temporarily.

Community-reported

Offline & Single-Player

Patch 0.1.3 added Offline Mode for single-player. Players can now launch and continue solo worlds without an internet connection. Co-op multiplayer still requires online connectivity.

What changed: Before Patch 0.1.3, even solo play required an internet connection. Now the game detects no connection and enters Offline Mode automatically. All saves are compatible.
